You can effectively extend a touring holiday of Europe by several days and perhaps save money. To do it you need a Eurail pass and a little forward planning. This is how it works. With a Eurail Pass you can go from city center to city center in Europe in great comfort at a reasonable price.

The key to this is the phrase ‘city center to city center’.

Consider Paris. The airport, Charles de Gaulle, is 23 km north-east of Paris. If you go by taxi in either direction it costs the national debt and takes 45 minutes. There are regular buses and trains but your journey is never going to be less than 45 minutes. Leaving, you have security to go through and the airlines would like you there well before take-off. At least an hour, sometimes two hours.

Thus on any flight you find that as much as six hours, never less than four, are spent getting to the airport, checking in, flying, getting there and collecting your luggage. Then getting to the center of your destination.

By train, in every capital in Europe (I have searched and found no exception) you arrive in the center of the city.

Yes, you need to be at the train station ten minutes before the train leaves — make it fifteen minutes to be on the safe side — and when you get to your destination it is instant arrival. Your baggage is with you and you are there, bang in the center of the city. To test this stay with Paris for the moment.

At Easter — one of the busiest times of the year for Paris — I arrived at Gare de L’Est, one of the main stations of Paris. In the station was the tourist help desk — every station in Europe has a help desk.

There I explained what I wanted — an inexpensive (as in under 50 Euros a night) room in a hotel near Place Republique with a view over the rooftops of Paris. And I got it confirmed in ten minutes and went happily on my way. (In passing, it was the most romantic room I have ever had in a hotel anywhere and this was Paris in the spring and the chestnuts were in bloom and, alas, I was alone.)

On this trip I traveled from Salerno in Sicily right through Italy and then France, on to Spain to Barcelona to wonder at the work of Gaudi, back to Greece and then up again to Germany to Mainz. I had a lot of ground to cover and this was the best and least expensive and most pleasurable way. I saved a lot of time and a lot of money.

(And, if you are interested in old motorcycles you should know that I spent my birthday touring Sicily on a 350cc Royal Enfield which was an exact replica of the sixties model but made in Madras. I could have hired the 500 cc model but thought that going a bit over the top.)

You will typically only be dealing with relatively short travel times — Paris to Lyon is two hours, Amsterdam to Cologne three hours, Geneva to Paris three-and-a-half hours and so on — and these will be pleasurable experiences because the trains are fast, comfortable (especially in first class) and wonderfully quiet.

The best examples of the modern trains of Europe are the TGV trains of France, which are part of the Euro City network.

I am writing this while I travel on the TGV express — TGV stands for Train a Grande Vitesse which translates, roughly, as high speed train — from Paris to Avignon. The quietness — we are running on rubber tyres — is eerie. This is first class, and there is a three seat configuration in the carriage — two and one. I am in the single seat, which is adjustable and comfortable.

There is a tip-down table, on which rests my computer.

We are now nipping through the suburbs of Paris at more than 200 kilometers an hour. We will eventually reach our maximum cruise speed, which is more than 270 kilometers an hour. There is no sway, no rattle, no lurch, and no jerk.

A gentleperson’s conveyance for the grand tour of Europe.

For trains between big cities, the best bets are the super fast name trains like (ah ! the romance in the names) Catalan Tago, Maria Theresa, Voltaire, Leonardo da Vinci, Etoile du Nord. These are very fast and are almost never late.

Sometimes you will use the train only as high-speed, economical and comfortable transport, but at other times the train ride can be a sightseeing trip as well.

Bernina Express in Switzerland, the Bergen Express in Norway, and the Lois rail in France are examples where the journey is part of the scenic holiday.

Important points to remember:

• Bear in mind that Europeans very sensibly use a 24-hour clock in matters of this sort. That is: five o’clock in the afternoon becomes 1700 hours and half-past nine in the evening is 2130. Easy once you get the hang of it.

• As you start your train journeys you need to have your Eurailpass validated, for which you will have to show your passport. Do it before you get on any train at the information window of any largish railway station. You will be given back your ticket and a validation slip.

• Keep your validation slip separate from the ticket. It constitutes proof of ownership. (If you are a worry wart like me, make a photocopy of both straight away and remember to keep the copy in the lining of your suitcase.)

• Make sure you go to the right station. Every city in Europe has several different railway stations. This TGV train I am riding started from Gare de Lyon in Paris. But there are six other mainline train stations in that city of light. The concierge at your hotel will advise you.

• When you get to the station make sure you get on the right platform and into the right car. The signs are always very clear and railway staff are always most helpful. There will be a board confirming the name, number and time of departure of the train at the entrance to the platform when you get there.

• Getting into the right car, as opposed to the right train, is essential; in modern trains it is the car that is sent by computer control to its destination. On the side of every car is an identification panel that tells you the number of the car, where the car is heading and the names of the most important stops on the way. Check the panel carefully and, if you are still in doubt, show your ticket to the conductor of the train and explain exactly where you are going.

• Limits. An Eurail pass is for x number of journeys over a given period of time. Do not waste the pass on short trips.

Example: I was in Nice and had to go to Cannes. I went by train and bought a ticket. You do not waste your Eurail Pass on journeys on trips that take less than an hour.

• Ubiquity. Every station seems to have a Eurail booking desk. Be organized and try and book as far ahead as you can if you want a sleeper. These trains do get fully booked, especially during the holiday season, and the earlier you book, the more certain you are of getting the right train.

• Sleep on the train. If it is a very long journey take the evening train and sleep on board. On a first class Eurail tickets the sleeper is part of the package.

This has great advantages. It saves you the cost of one night’s accommodation and it gets what could be a longish journey over in considerable comfort and style. For example, I went from Salerno in Sicily right up the leg of Italy to Genoa and did it on a night train and slept like a baby.

One has to be careful.

There is a story about a passionate young couple who used their sleeper not for sleeping. In a moment of ecstasy the young lady hung on like mad to the nearest object. Sadly, it was the emergency stop communication cord.

• If possible, take your own snacks. There was a thought in my mind that food on European trains would be a gourmet’s delight. In my experience, it is very far from that. On the other hand, almost all station restaurants serve good food at very reasonable prices provided you stay away from the fast food chains.

• Get the right stop. As you come into a city make sure you do not get off at a suburban stop which is, typically, the stop before the central station. If in doubt, ask the ticket inspector or the guard. No need to be able to speak the language. Just show your ticket and they will tell you what to do.

• Travel light. If you cannot easily carry your baggage you are stuffed. Porters do not exist. Not at any station I have ever seen.

• Use all of the pass. When planning your itinerary, be bold. You can go from Greece to Oslo and pretty much everywhere else in between.

• Not the UK. All of this applies to Europe except for Britain. A Eurail Pass does not work there. Britain is not part of Europe. Whatever made you think otherwise?

Sites which can help…

Eurail: It claims, correctly, that it is the only official Eurail site. This is true. But it is not the only site that can give you information. And it is certainly not the only site that can sell you tickets. It does, however, make a very good starting point because from here you can sort out potential timings and itineraries.

Europe: This is not the official site but it might just as well be considered as such. There is nothing about Eurail that it does not know.

Europe by Eurail: Again, this is a commercial firm selling tickets but that does not stop it having a load of useful information on the site.

Boots ‘n All Travel: Would you buy a ticket from a company with a name like that? Let us not be snobbish. It has great expertise on Eurail and its site is very helpful.

It’s not surprising that Australia is one of the least densely populated country in the world. With a population of (as of 2006) 20,675,614 spread over a total land area of 7,686,850 square kilometres, that’s a mere 2.6 people per square kilometer. Two people for every square kilometer is not a lot. Kinda makes Australia seem a lonely place then, huh?
Of course, this isn’t the real case; population density figures don’t mean exact numbers of people per land area. It is just a raw and rough gauge in measuring how population is distributed across the country. It’s just so happened that Australia is a pretty big countryalso a continentwhile there aren’t too many people in it.
But one thing’s for sure: it’s not going to be lonely in Australia. Australians are a fun-loving people. To be an Australian is to know the Great Outdoor; you can even say Aussies are allergic to the enclosed space. When they’re not sailing in the seas, or scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, or playing footy (a version of soccer), or in simply having a grand time in any of Australia’s parks, they’re probably trekking the Outback, that unexplored and awesome region in the middle of the country. There’s always something to do in Australia. Australia is bustling, even at night.
And there’s always a mate (a friend) to get to know there. Australia is a lovely melting pot besides. Over the years, thousands of migrants have flocked into the country, a welcome multicultural, kaleidoscopic diversity that’s changing the face of the population in the land Down Under every second. Australia’s shores are open to people of all races and backgrounds, thanks to its non-discriminatory immigration policy. And because of Australia’s plenty job opportunities and high standard of living, it’s no wonder Australia is the top destination pick of most immigrants.
Indeed, in Australia, there’s always room for one more. Australia may be vast and overwhelming, but it’s never boring, never uneventful, and certainly never empty. The people there fill it out quite fine and well.

California is known for its pristine coastline, but the state also has plenty of great fresh-water lakes, including Clear Lake, just a couple hours drive north from San Francisco.A friend visited Clear Lake not too long ago and came back raving about the area’s unexpected scenic and natural beauty – so we had to investigate. On a recent swing through Northern California, we dropped in on Clear Lake, staying at a small, unpretentious waterfront resort that brought back childhood memories of vacationing at lakefront resorts in Central Washington state. It was like vacationing in a simpler place at a simpler time.At 43,000 acres, Clear Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in California, and some say it may be the oldest lake in North America. The lake is the centerpiece for several communities in the Lake County area, including Lakeport, Clearlake, Kelseyville, Glenhaven and several others. Taken together, these communities and several parks in the area offer a wide range of family vacation activities.Chief among those are boating, fishing and swimming, three main reasons people stay at the Seabreeze Resort in Glenhaven, headquarters for our brief stay in the Clear Lake area. Owner Steve Nash happened on the resort many years ago as he was looking to buy a waterfront house. His accountant advised him that the income from the resort would go a long way toward helping to pay for his new waterfront home, and so Nash – who had never operated any sort of lodging facility – took the plunge.Today, Nash divides his time between Clear Lake and San Diego, where he lives during winter months. But every year, April through October, it’s back to Clear Lake and the round-the-clock chores of managing the resort. With only one housekeeper for help, Nash is up at dawn each day, working to well past sundown. But, as we discovered, he always finds time to chat and joke around with his guests – many of whom have been returning to the small resort for many years.Since we were traveling with a four-year-old, we were booked into the “family wing” of the resort – some housekeeping units a little further from the water and from the guests in the waterfront adult wing. Our cottage was like a small apartment, maybe 1950s vintage, but nicely remodeled and cheerfully decorated. A full kitchen was included, as well as a living room, bath and a bedroom with two queen beds. Thankfully, on this summer visit, the unit was air conditioned. Our cottage had a grassy area, lunge chairs and several individuals just outside the door. Nearby was Steve’s fragrant flower garden – which he obviously takes great care in maintaining – and then a few steps further was the boat launch, dock and swimming area. In short, the Seabreeze offered everything you need for a restful lakefront stay or a base of operations for your boating holiday. But we were visiting Clear Lake to explore. Just why was everyone raving about this lake? The first thing we discovered was that, as advertised, the lake and its surroundings are beautiful. The blue-water lake is in the middle of a hilly, mostly treed landscape that is especially interesting when approaching from the east. We also noticed that this lake is big. On the map it looked like it would be fairly easy to circumnavigate since there were highways, roadways and towns and villages on almost every part of the lake. Once we were driving, however, it soon became apparent our trip around the lake was going to take us at least a half day.Along the way we stopped in several little lakeside towns, including the largest city, Clearlake, which is the largest population center in a region that only has about 12,000 year-round residents. Each town is different, but all share the beauty of Clear Lake and recreation opportunities are never far away.Along most shores of the lake you’ll find a combination of private residences and small motels and inns like the Seabreeze. We did note, however, there is a large timeshare resort on the northwest shore, as well as the famous Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa, known for bringing headline musical acts in for performances in the Outdoor Konocti Field Amphitheater as well as the resort’s indoor showroom. Altogether, the resort puts on about 100 shows per year.We noticed that parks are abundant throughout the region. Many are located on the more than 100 miles of shoreline but, in addition to camping and watersports, several parks offer other features. For example, the Anderson Marsh State Park is known for nature walks and birdwatching, while the Middletown Trailside Nature Preserve offers the “EcoArts Lake County Scupture Walk” conducted on 107 acres of natural park. The area’s history is highlighted at the Anderson Marsh State Historic Park. There are plenty of other opportunities to learn about the history of Clear Lake, including two county museums, the Lake County Museum in Lakeport and the Lower Lake Historical Schoolhouse Museum in Lower Lake. Learn about the stars at the Taylor Planetarium and Observatory in Kelseyville. For those who enjoy visiting wineries, this region has several that are all within easy driving distance of the lake.No matter which shoreline, there seemed to be plenty of anglers taking advantage of what the locals say is the best bass fishing in the West. The bass fishing is so good that several professional bass fishing organizations have designated Clear Lake as the best bass lake in the country. But it’s not just bass — catfish, blackfish, Sacramento perch, hitch, crappie and bluegill are all caught at Clear Lake.

We attempt to carry a vacation as a family a minimum of once a year and pay a visit to a place that we have never been prior to. Our family has witnessed most of the favorite family vacation destinations, such as the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and Washington, D.C., but some of my favorite areas to go and stop by have not been that far from household. My family lives in North Texas, so one of the obvious options for a vacation is the Alamo. My family may be there on a couple of occasions, and while it truly is one of the more frequent family vacation destinations for folks from close to the country, it takes on a unique meaning for persons from Texas. The fantastic thing about visiting the Alamo is always that my kids constantly take pleasure in going, partly mainly because we continually check out SeaWorld as well, and it truly is much less than 300 miles from our house. That indicates we can ensure it is in a half of the day’s drive and also have the majority of our trip devoted to relaxing and sight-seeing as opposed to driving. There is certainly also some thing to be mentioned about saving on the cost of flying.Another of our favorite family vacation destinations is New Orleans, because there is so much culture and entertainment there, and it is difficult to find a spot on the planet which has better food. We constantly allow it to be a point to check out the French Quarter when we go down there, and our children adore to ride the Steamer Natchez out on the Mississippi River. Our family can also be very big into music, to ensure that always makes New Orleans a common spot to visit, mainly because you’ll be able to hear all diverse types of music playing, practically all day extended. There is certainly also a area in central Texas called the Hill Country that, specifically over latest years, has become one of the family vacation destinations we most enjoy. Apart from the actuality that the scenic beauty of the region is totally breathtaking, with the economy the way that it truly is, it’s one of the most cost-effective vacations we can consider. It is less than 200 miles from our household, and you can find all kinds of points to do, from tours to purchasing to children’s actions, and it doesn’t break the bank. Texas is a large state, and one of the greatest things about this particular family vacation destination is the fact that it enables them to understand more about a area of the state about which they aren’t too familiar.Family vacation destinations to do not have be costly or far aside. There are lots of places within driving distance of most Americans just to get aside, relax and also have a good time, and still be much less than a day’s travel from home.

The travel industry is experiencing new challenges with the increasing price of fuel, worsening airport delays and the weak US dollar. Fortunately, vacationers are getting smarter instead of giving up and staying home. They are comparing domestic and foreign currencies to help choose destinations, comparing road vs. air travel, purchasing all-inclusive travel packages and even rediscovering travel destinations close to home. But where is everyone going, and more importantly, what types of destinations are attracting them?

Google Trends is an online tool that offers insight into travel trends around the world. The tool is provided by Google Labs and shows comparisons of popularity for different search phrases. Try it for yourself: go to Google Trends (see the link at the end of this article), copy “business travel, vacation travel, holiday travel” (with commas but without quotes) into the text box and hit the Search Trends button.

Do you see a graph with a colored line for each of the three phrases you entered? Notice the years listed along the x-axis, including tick marks at each quarter year. Google Trends uses the first phrase in your list as a baseline for comparison to the remaining phrases. Can you see how interest in vacation and holiday travel is higher than interest in business travel?

Seasonal trends vary for the different travel types. For example, interest in vacation travel is highest in January and steadily declines toward December. Holiday travel follows a similar trend except for a large surge in interest during midyear (meaning summer in the northern hemisphere). Business travel has constant popularity throughout the year except for a drop in December, when weary road warriors spend more time with family for the holidays.

Now let’s look at regional interest for your search phrases. Near the bottom of the page, change the selection in the “Rank by” drop-down list, then look at the regions with the most searches for those phrases (remember, these are the places where online searches originated, not the places where people want to visit). You’ll see “vacation travel” is a popular phrase in Canada, the USA and the United Kingdom, while “holiday travel” is popular in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. This knowledge can help you identify important keywords for target audiences in different regions.

It’s important to understand that the data in Google Trends is normalized, meaning the results are ranked in comparison to all searches for the given area. This keeps areas with high populations from overwhelming the results in comparison to other regions. The benefit is you can estimate the percent interest from a region’s population independently of the size of the population. In our example, there might be more people in New York than London searching for “business travel”, but according to Google Trends, a higher percentage of London’s than New York’s population is interested in business travel.

In Part 2 we’ll explore travel trends by destination type.

Location

Two hundred and ten kilometers off the coast of Africa, lie a group of islands in the possession of Spain known as the Canary Islands. Gran Canaria is one of these, the third larges island in the chain, and is roughly round with a population of over 800,000. This island may not be the biggest or most populous island around, but it is no backwards locale, either. Transport & Getting Around The Island

Getting around the Island of Gran Canaria is made easy by a system of highways that encircle the entire island and run up into the mountainous areas as well. Using these highways is a fleet of modern buses, which provide the best way to get around and to see the island. A railway has also been approved, and construction hinges now on the budgeting. There is a single airport on the island, the International Airport of Gran Canaria-Gando, which is known as one of the busiest Spanish airports because of the vast amount of traffic. Weather & Landscape

The Island of Gran Canaria is a wonderful place to visit and to vacation. Most of the 2.2 million visitors to the island prefer the southern part of Gran Canaria, which is sunny and warmer than the northern part. The west coast of the island is mostly mountainous, while the eastern side is flatter and dotted with many beaches. For those who enjoy natural wonders, Gran Canaria is interesting in that it is almost a “mini-continent”, with a wide range of unique ecosystems almost unheard of in such a small place. Resorts & Attractions

If you are on a Gran Canaria holiday, you will most likely be staying in one of the resort communities on the southern part of the island. There are tourist flights that offer aerial views of the island, always a fascinating adventure, and many parks and preserves, most of which are open to the public. Attractions include the Dunes and Lighthouse of Maspalomas, Roque Nublo, botanical gardens, and much more.

There are destinations on Gran Canaria for just about anyone, from a community that welcomes gay tourists to places for the whole family to enjoy, to spots for honeymooning couples to romance one another. There is as much to do on Gran Canaria as there are ecosystems, which is to say that there is very little chance that you will become bored with this popular destination island.
